Richard Allen Newquist, 78, of Crookston, Minnesota, died at his home unexpectedly, Saturday, March 6, 2010.

Richard was born at Crookston on December 22, 1931, the son of Charles and Clara Newquist. He was raised in Crookston and attended Crookston schools. On July 10, 1951 Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. Following his honorable discharge on March 5, 1954 he returned to the area. Richard was united in marriage to Geraldine Hansen at Clearbrook, Minnesota on June 27, 1954. The couple made their home in Crookston throughout their married lives and together raised seven children. Richard was employed by the American Crystal Sugar Company from 1958 until 1993, retiring after thirty-five years of dedicated service. He enjoyed camping, outdoor activities, and most importantly, spending time with his family. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and also held memberships in Eagle's Aerie #873 and American Legion Post #1902. Richard will be very sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and many friends.

Loving family members include his wife of 56 years, Geraldine; children, Randy Newquist of Nederland, CO, Tony (Polly) Newquist, Jim (Marti) Newquist, and Dan (Lori) Newquist, all of Crookston, MN, David (Kathy) Newquist of Swea City, IA, Kathy (Tom) Mix of Crookston, and Lisa (Kurtis) Boe of Hatton, ND; fourteen grandchildren, Ryan, Rachel, Cassie, Dalton, Carrie, Beth, Natasha, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Mikayla, Stacey, Steven, Travis and Lucas; six great-grandchildren, Coby, Kaela, Kendra, Jaden, Andrina and Ezra; a brother, Charles Newquist of Alamogordo, NM; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Myrtle, Merle, Cleo and Ted.

The funeral service for Richard Allen Newquist will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, March 12, 2010 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN, with the Rev. Jo Gast, officiating. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home on Thursday from 5-7:00 pm, with a 7:00 pm prayer service, and for an hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council.
