Banker. A native of Reckendorf, Bavaria, Hellman moved to the United States in 1859 and settled in Los Angeles where he got a job working as a store clerk before opening his own store a few years later. In 1868 he began a career in banking when he co-founded Hellman, Temple and Co. and in 1871, he co-founded Farmers and Merchants Bank with former California Governor John Downey. In 1879 he was one of the founders of the University of Southern California. In 1881 he was appointed to the Board of Regents of the University of California serving until 1918. In 1890 he moved to San Francisco where he was hired as President of the Nevada Bank, which later became Nevada National Bank in 1898. In 1905 he oversaw the merging of Nevada National Bank with Wells Fargo & Co. to form Wells Fargo Nevada National Bank and would serve as president of the bank until his death in 1920.
