Emma (Stensland) Phillips

Funeral services were held Monday, July 22, 1968, at Zion Luther Church for Emma Phillips, who passed away early Friday morning, July 19, after suffering a heart attack.

Rev. Donald Sheen and Rev. P. B. Stensland officiated. Mrs. Robert Nelson was organist, and accompanied Arnold Edmundson, soloist.

Casket bearers were Gerald Phillips, Gene Phillips, George Phillips, Glenn Phillips, Philip Gilman and Roger Engebretson. Interment was in the church cemetery by Foster / Lindquist Funeral Chapel.

Emma Stensland was born near Garretson, July 11, 1893, to Mr. and Mrs. Lars Stensland. She was baptized and confirmed in the West Palisades Lutheran Church.

On December 18, 1915, she married Nead Phillips, and they moved to a farm near Valley Springs, where they lived for two years. They then moved to a farm near Garretson, where they lived until 1961, when they retired and moved to Garretson.

Mrs. Phillips was a member of Zion Lutheran church, and was active in the ladies aid and in the Circles. She also was a 4-H Club leader for many years.

She is survived by her husband, a son, Vernus, and a daughter, Loraine (Milton) Edmundson all of Garretson; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Lorenza Engebretson, Sherman, Mrs. Luella Klovstad, Sioux Falls, Mrs. Rudolph Engebretson, Garretson and Mrs. Roy Lorenzen, Sioux Falls, and two brothers, Thomas, Garretson, and Selmer, Hot Springs.
