Rev. James Harry Lackey, 88, went to be with the Lord, on Friday March 5, 2010 at the Silver Stream Health and Rehab Center.

He was born in Rockingham, NC on September 4, 1921 to the late Blanche and William Lackey. Remembered is his wife of 65 years, Helen Edwards Lackey who died September 8, 2008, his brother Leonard Lackey, two sisters, Hazel Ward and Millie Rackley.

Rev. Lackey was ordained as a Baptist Minister in 1956 at Gibson Avenue Baptist Church. He served as pastor at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Wilmington for 26 years until August of 1982. He also served as pastor of Prospect Baptist Church in Supply early in his ministry and during his retirement he served as pastor at Pine View Baptist Church. He was a proud veteran of the US Navy serving during WW II. He retired from Babcock and Wilcox with 31 years of service, and later was a Wal-Mart Greeter for many years at the store on Market Street and became known as the "can man" and had raised over $5000 to help needy children with the proceeds from collecting aluminum cans.

He is survived by two daughters, Sharon L. Cheston, and Sue L. Jeffries and her husband L.B. "Rusty" Jeffries; his special grandsons, Jason B. Jeffries and wife Pattie, and Jonathan E. Cheston; brother in law Ken Edwards and wife Gerrie and their children Kirk Edwards and wife Kathy, and Douglas Edwards and wife Lynn, and son Reid; niece Dr. Cinthia Fletcher-Fulrod and her twin sons, John and Matthew Fletcher; sister in law, Fran Lackey; nieces and nephews, A.C. Everette and his wife Sandy, William Lackey and Trudy Lackey, Judy Mittnacht, Dee Ann Ward, Brenda Bowen, Tammy Ward, Don Ward, Jr.; special neighbors, Debbie Daughtry, Beau Bowen, Carter Miller, and Maggie Hardison, and special friends Rachel and Jack Reynolds.

Special thank you is extended to Dr. Neill Musselwhite and staff for their love and care through the years, also a special thank you to Silver Stream Health Center for loving and caring for our "Dad" and "Pop-Pop" for the last 4 months of his life. Thanks to Mitch, Suzanne, Shannon, Tabitha, Chris, Laura, Penny, both Donnas, Monifa, Sissy, Jeff and all others who extended care and comfort to our family. Thank you also to Community Home Care and Hospice who were available for all our needs.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held 2 pm Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. Rev. Rick Howell and Rev. Vic Potter will officiate. Music will be provided by Pattie Jeffries and Donna Merritt. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jonathan Cheston, Jason Jeffries, A. C. Everette, Jack Reynolds, Larry White, and James Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be Carter Miller, Bob Thompson, David Southerland, Ryland Powell, Harry Fryer, and Ernest Daniel.
