Lugene Smith, 89, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 9:37 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion.He was born in Harrisburg on Sept. 15, 1920, a son of John Elvis and Ada Leona (Palmer) Smith. He was married to Pauline Miller.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor D. Wayne Heil officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 141. Interment will be in Sursa Cemetery in Jefferson County.Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, Alson Smith of Mt. Vernon and Dennis Smith of LaPlace; three daughters, Phyllis Bopp and husband Robert of LaPlace, Judy Askew and husband Jim of Mt. Vernon and Linda Smith of Mt. Vernon; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Wathene Littrell and husband Glenn of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.His parents; son, Rodney Smith; seven brothers; and three sisters preceded him in death.Lugene was a member of Howard Chapel Church and attended New Life Harvest Church. He served in the United States Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from Vernois Inc.
