Dayton was a member of the Tuscarora Presbyterian Church serving as an elder of the church.

He was a boilermaker by trade with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, working there for over 44 years before retiring in 1966.

He was a member of the B & O Veteran Employees Association and the American Federation of Labor Union No. 38. He was also a member of the Retired Men's Club.

After retirement he worked with his brother, Grant Canby, as a carpenter.
