NEWPORT NEWS - Col. Melvin Merle Wolfe, U.S. Army (Ret), died suddenly Oct. 18, 2009, at the age of 89.

He served in the Army for 30 years and was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit (2), Army Commendation Medal (2), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Distinguished Service Award, Meritorious Service Award, World War II Victory Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. He served in WWII and Vietnam.

Mr. Wolfe volunteered at Riverside Hospital and played a major part in founding of the Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Wolfe of 67 years; his children, Donna White, Karen Stotsky, Michael Wolfe, Steven Wolfe, Brian Wolfe and their spouses; 11 grandchildren and their spouses; seven great-grandchildren; two siblings.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News. A service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
