Commodore Walling graduated Annapolis in the class of 1876. He retired voluntarily after 35 years of service in 1911. He had commanded a naval station in Puerto Rico and directed conversion of the naval base at Culebra, Virgin Islands into a coaling station. His last regular command was the cruiser Birmingham.

He was recalled to duty when the United States entered World War I.

He was a recognized expert in electricity and was author of a textbook used at Annapolis for many years.

Commodore Walling died suddenly at his apartment in San Diego, CA

He was survived by his wife, Wilhelmina Boyd Walling and two daughters, Mrs. Grace Walling Spore, widow of Comdr. J. S. Spore and Mrs. Burnice Walling Heneberger, wife of Lt. H. B. Heneberger, U.S.N.; also a sister, Mrs. Belle W. Haffner of Ohio.
