Now to continue with the biography of Joseph Harney Thibadeau;
Joseph Harvey Thibadeau served initially as a Private in Co. B of the 8th Regiment of Maine Volunteer Infantry, but soon was selected to serve as it's Sergeant Major.

Joseph was a clerk in the Paymaster General's Office, residing in Falls Church, VA at the time of his death. He had served as a captain of a Maine regiment in the Civil War from 1861 until the end, then moved first to Oshkosh, WI, then to Atlanta, GA, where he ran several businesses.

He took his own life by gunshot, standing in front of a mirror in the St. James Hotel. He left a long letter saying he was in financial straits, and more importantly, the victim of a persecution "greater than that of Dreyfus" but that he was innocent, and asking that he be buried at Arlington, "where repose the remains of five of my warmest and truest friends". The source of his trouble remained a mystery.

According to news reports, he left a wife and eleven living children. Six of the children were by a former marriage; one of these, Baxter, was living in Falls Church, and the other five in Atlanta.
