Enlisted, June 11, 1917, in Machine Gun Troop, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City. Machine Gun Troop was reorganized for the World War, as Company C, 105t Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. The 105th Machine Gun Battalion was assigned with the 27th Division to Camp Wadsworth, SC, for training.

After training at Camp Wadsworth, the 105th MG Battalion shipped out for Europe, May17, 1918, aboard the USS Calomares, from Newport News, VA. The battalion docked, May 30, 1918, at St. Nazaire, France.

After additional combat training in France, the 105th MG Battalion entered the Lines, July 17, 1918. He saw combat in both Belgium & France and wounded in action ( shellfire ), October 17, 1918, at Selle River, France. Awarded the Silver Star, order # 86, 27th Division. Discharged April 1, 1919, Camp Upton, NY.

He returned to the States with the 105th MG Battalion, aboard the USS Leviathan, February 26, 1919, from Brest, France and docking at Hoboken, NJ, March 6, 1919. He marched in the great " Welcome Home Parade " for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City. Discharged from the service, April 1, 1919, at Camp Upton, NY.

Silver Star, Order Number , S.O. 86, 27th Division, " For exceptional courage , coolness and devotion to duty in advancing his machine guns under heavy enemy shell fire and maintaining throughout the action a steady fire the enemy despite severe losses and by his disregard for personal safety setting a good example to the men under his command. This in the battle of the Hindenburg Line, France, September 27 - 29, 1918 ".

Post war service, he served with the 51st Machine Gun Squadron, NYNG ( Squadron A ), June 14,1921 - November 14, 1922.
