Fellow U.S. Navy Seaman Thomas Burke (Find-A-Grave Memorial #8535435) was awarded a peace-time Medal of Honor: "For heroic conduct, in rescuing from drowning James Rose and John Russell, seamen, of the U.S.S. Winooski, off Eastport, Maine, 10 May 1866."

In the 1870's his ship sailed into Puget Sound in what is now Washington State, where he wrote home that there were "more Indians than white men"; and he did a bit of trading for a beaded elkskin bag that is still in the family.

His ship also sailed off for the Far East, where he also traded for items that are still cherished possessions of family members.
