Myrtle B. Hatfield, 96, a resident of The Devonshire retirement community in Hampton, Va., died Friday, May 30, 2003.
Mrs. Hatfield was born in Shenandoah, Va., Sept. 9, 1906. She was the first of five children born to the late Benjamin Franklin Breeden
and Dana Comer Breeden and lived the majority of her life in the Shenandoah area.
Mrs. Hatfield graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1924 and in 1929, received a normal professional certificate, which qualified her to teach all subjects in the elementary grades, from State Teachers College at Harrisonburg, Va., later renamed Madison
College, and still later, James Madison University.
All of her teaching career was spent in the Shenandoah area, where she began teaching at age 18 at Comertown School. Here, she taught all grades from first to seventh. She later taught at the Grove Hill School and at the Shenandoah Elementary School. Over a career of
32 years in teaching, she touched many lives and made many friends.
Mrs. Hatfield was an active member of Fields United Methodist Church in Shenandoah until her move to Hampton in 1997 to be near her stepson and his family.
In 1951, she married Dr. James E. Hatfield, a physician, and lived in Shenandoah and later in Roanoke, Va. The couple returned to Shenandoah upon Dr. Hatfield's retirement. He predeceased
her in 1974. Also predeceasing her were a stepson, Douglas H. Hatfield and a stepdaughter, Maxine Hatfield VanHyning.
Surviving are two stepsons and their wives, Joseph P. Hatfield and Barbara House Hatfield of Burnsville, Minn., and Jack J. Hatfield and Gwendolyn Burrill Hatfield of Yorktown, Va. Also surviving are stepgrandsons and stepgranddaughters and their families, and numerous nephews and their families.
The family will receive friends at the Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on June 11.
Myrtle requested cremation and a simple graveside service.
The service will be conducted by the Rev. Stephen R. Creech on June 12 at 11 a.m. at the Coverstone Cemetery in Shenandoah, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Fields United Methodist' Church, c/o Debbie Creech, 501 Senior
Avenue, Shenandoah, Va., 22849.
