Air Force Colonel

Harold A. Mauger Jr., 56, a retired Air Force colonel who also had been a master facilities planner with the Defense Intelligence Agency, died of cancer Oct. 31 at the Malcolm Grow Air Force Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs.
Col. Mauger, who lived in Alexandria, was born in Jacksonville. He graduated from the Citadel Military College in South Carolina. He earned a master's degree in business administration from George Washington University and a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Troy State University in Alabama.
He joined the Air Force in 1955 and was a flight instructor during the late 1950s. He later was a squadron officer at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He served in Germany during the early 1960s and was in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.
Col. Mauger was transferred to the Washington area in 1970. He had assignments in Pakistan as a defense and air attache before he was assigned to the DIA in 1982. He retired from the Air Force in 1985. He returned to the DIA as a civilian employee in 1987 and remained with the agency until his death.
His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Defense Meritorious Medal, and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Mauger of Alexandria; one daughter, Annmarie M. Wilmeth of Lorton, and one grandson.
