Col. John Dudley Long was born in Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN. on Sept. 07, 1876 to Mary Ann Downs & David Franklin Long. He served in the US Calvary from his notes. He graduated from West Point in 1899. From notes of West Point, Class of 1899: Controversy surrounded the graduation of the Class of 1899. Due to the Spanish-American War, the Army considered allowing the class to graduate in 1898 after only three years. The belief that "the standards of the Academy would be lowered" by such an early graduation prevailed, however, and the cadets continued into their fourth year. Nevertheless, the issue of an early graduation followed the Class of 1899. The growing insurgency in the Philippines created a continued need for additional officers, so the class eventually graduated early on Feb. 15 1899. He served in Cuba twice: once in 1900 and again in 1906-07. He also served as an Assistant Instructor of Tactics at the Academy in 1909. As a military attaché, he served in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. He then attended the Advanced Course and the Command and General Staff School. He was a senior unit instructor with the Organized Reserve of Baltimore and retired in 1940 by operation of law. He was friends with Dwight D. Eisenhower and also a friend of George Edson, founder of The Stewart Clan Magazine for many years. Col. Long was a noted genealogist for over 50 years. He donated his large collection to the Indiana State Library. Manuscript Section, Indiana Division - Indiana State Library - Colonel John Dudley Long Papers L472, 17th century-1960s,15 mss boxes that I spent a week going through that wasn't long enough. He married Mabel Annora Neal on Mar 01, 1928 in Manila, Philippine Islands. Even though Col. Long and his wife did not have any children, many descendants owe him a debt of gratitude for his service to our country, and for preserving our family history of which I am one. Thank you Col. John Dudley Long!, your cousin, Laura J. Stewart
