George served in the Union Navy as an Assistant Surgeon on the ironclad gunboat, USS Mound City. He was wounded when the USS Mound City was bombarded on the White River near St. Charles, Arkansas. He later resigned from the service due to his injuries from the explosions on the gunboat.
