Harold K. Butcher, 92

Commander Harold Kenneth Butcher, U.S. Navy Retired, died Dec. 11, 2008, in Hagerstown. He was 92.
Born Aug. 27, 1916, in West Riverside, Calif., he was the youngest child of William and Edna Mae Butcher. He graduated from Glendale High School in 1934 and enlisted in the Navy in 1935. In 1941, he wed Mary Charlotte Neilson of Landsdowne, Md., and soon after reported for flight training in Pensacola, Fla. He earned his wings in October 1941 and in May of 1943, he was commissioned an officer.
Cmdr. Butcher saw much action in the Pacific during World War II, flying F-6F Hellcats participating in the landing at Iwo Jima and the preparations for the invasion of the Japanese mainland. After the war, Cmdr. Butcher attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., but his academic career was cut short when he was ordered to return to squadron duty at the outbreak of the Korean War. He served in a variety of flying and non-flying tours after Korea, including Navigator on the USS Leyte Gulf, Air Operations Officer at McMurdo Sound in Antarctica and at the Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington, D.C. Cmdr. Butcher retired from the military in 1965.
He and his wife enjoyed 60 years together before Mary died in January of 2002. They loved traveling and spent much of their later years traveling to various parts of the world visiting family and friends. The last years of his life were spent at the Robinwood Retirement Home in Hagerstown.
He is survived by three children, Kenneth Neal Butcher and his wife, Shari Butcher, of Paonia, Colo., Nancy Tankersley and her husband, Carl Tankersley, of Easton, Md., and Peggy Seiler and her husband, Dan Seiler, of Hagerstown; and six grandchildren, Lance Butcher of Annapolis, Md., Julie Seiler Sabal of Hagerstown, Benjamin Tankersley and Timothy Tankersley, both of Arlington, Va., Eric Seiler of San Francisco, Calif., and Meredith Tankersley of Baltimore.
The family will receive visitors at the family-owned Singleton Funeral and Cremation Services, 1 Second Ave., S.W. (at Crain Highway), Glen Burnie, Md., from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13. Words of Remembrance will be held at 4:30 p.m. His remains will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery along with those of his wife at an undetermined date in the spring. Donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
