1st Lieutenant Robert George Browning was a military pilot during World War I. He was assigned to the 96th Aero Squadron when it was organized on May 18, 1918. This squadron was the first in the United Air Service to have bombardment as its sole mission. The squadron was based at Amanty, France. The 96th staged its first operational raid on June 12, 1918. Lieutenant Browning and his observer, participated in this raid on the railroad yards at Dommaray-Baroncourt but had to drop out of their formation before reaching the lines. On July 10, 1918, the 96th suffered a great loss when an entire flight of six Breguets, including Lieutenant Browning, took off in poor weather, became lost, and landed near Koblenz, Germany by accident. Browning and the eleven other men were captured and spent the rest of the war as POWs.
