He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war. He was the son of William and Irene Cummings.

He enlisted in the Army on February 25, 1943 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the building of aircraft and also as Single, with dependents.

B-17G #43-38265 took off, with a crew of 9, from Station 156, England on a bombing mission over Kassel, Germany. They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire and crashed near Muenchenhof, Germany during the war. The entire crew was lost on this crash.

Joseph was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
