Ruth Rebecca Horton Gronneberg, 83, of Bozeman died in her sleep on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2005. She was born April 21, 1921, in Alexander, N.D., daughter of Robert Horton and Mary Loken. She grew up on a farm homesteaded by her parents. When Ruth was an infant, typhoid fever struck her entire family, resulting in her father's death. She lived with her grandmother and her uncle the next year of her life. As a result, Ruth did extensive outside farm work as a youth. One of her fond memories is of listening to her mother play the guitar and lead the family in singing hymns.

Ruth graduated from high school in Arnegard, N.D., in 1938. While in school she actively participated in class plays and choir productions.

She attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., for three years, and later graduated from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn.

She met her future husband, Cliff Gronneberg, while attending Concordia College. Ruth married I. Clifford Gronneberg on Feb. 16, 1946, in San Francisco, Calif. As Cliff was a chaplain in the Navy, they were stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, the first nine months of their marriage. After the war they moved to Malta to begin Cliff's ministry.

Ruth was an integral part of her husband's work, starting and directing numerous choirs, writing and producing Christmas programs, leading Bible studies, and whatever else was needed at the time. She was always meeting and including new people … a tireless worker in whatever church they were called. She will be fondly remembered for her sense of humor and warm smile.

She and Cliff served churches in Malta-Dodson-Loring, Mont.; Orrock, Minn.; Riverdale-Coleharber, N.D.; Scobey-Peerless, Mont.; Helena-Townsend; Harmony, Minn.; and St. Louis Park, Minn. After retirement, Cliff and Ruth returned to Montana to live in Bozeman. Since then Ruth faithfully accompanied Cliff on numerous interim pastor assignments throughout Montana and Wyoming.

Ruth was a wonderful organizer, both in her paid and volunteer work. While in Helena, she worked as a secretary to the attorney for the Montana House of Representatives, as well as for the Montana Credit Unions League Agency. In Minnesota, she organized and supervised senior citizen centers and nutrition programs in several counties.

Ruth loved music. She sang and directed numerous choirs during her lifetime. Highlights include being a soloist in the Concordia College Choir of Moorhead, Minn., and with the Bach Choir of San Francisco. While in the Bach Choir, Ruth and her sister, Louise, sang for the United Nations when it was formally organized.

Her three sisters, Cora, Esther and Louise, as well as her grandson, Ian, preceded Ruth in death.

Survivors include her husband, Cliff of Bozeman; their six children and their spouses: Ingrid Johnson (John) of Great Falls, Jim Gronneberg (Joanne) of Helena, Mark Gronneberg (Julie) of St. Charles, Mo., Mary Hardy of Bozeman, Paul Gronneberg (Judy) of St. Peter, Minn., and Krista Hammann (Denny) of Chaska, Minn.; along with 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at Hope Lutheran Church in Bozeman. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

Dahl Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.

Condolences may be sent to Cliff Gronneberg, 315 N. 17th Ave., Bozeman 59715. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Lutheran Church, 210 Grand Ave., Bozeman 59715.
