Thomas Perkins, III earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Louisiana State University and served with the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1944. He was owner of T.H. Perkins Furniture, Inc. in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and also served as chairman of the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority, McComb, MS. He served two terms as president of the International Camellia Society (1988-1994). The camellia is a native to eastern and southern Asia. Mr. Perkins was involved in the international and American camellia societies and even introduced several flowers to America. He always enjoyed looking for different varieties of camellias during his world travels, and is responsible for introducing many varieties to this country and in his local community of Brookhaven, MS. Many of his camellias continue to grace the historical homes in Brookhaven. The photo at right is of a variety propogated in 1994 by F.F. Becker and named in his honor (C. japonica 'Tom Perkins').

Thomas H. Perkins III, 77, of Brookhaven, died Jan. 1, 2000, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Visitation is 4-7 tonight at Brookhaven Funeral Home. Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Brookhaven with the Rev. Lonnie Joe Hallberg officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Brookhaven.

Mr. Perkins was born Nov. 18, 1922, in Brookhaven. He was the son of Thomas H. Perkins Jr. and Clara Whittington Perkins.

He was co-owner of T. H. Perkins Furniture Company from 1950-1988. Mr. Perkins was a world traveler, who through his travels made special purchases for his customers at Perkins Furniture.

He was a well-known horticulturist who traveled the world studying camellias. He was a lecturer for horticultural seminars in China, Japan, England, Jersey Island, Italy, New Zealand and Australia. His travels brought friendships with fellow horticulturalists from around the globe, many of whom visited Brookhaven to view his gardens and participate in the annual Brookhaven Camellia Show, which he and the late F. F. "Boozie" Becker started in 1961.

In 1994, a special hybridized camellia plant developed by Mr. Becker was named "Tom Perkins."

Mr. Perkins was president of the American Camellia Society and was the first American to serve as president of the International Camellia Society. He was president of Brookhaven Beautiful for years.

He recently was chairman of the Southwest Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. He was chairman of the Housing Authority of Southwest Mississippi and was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Brookhaven/Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brookhaven.

Mr. Perkins attended the University of Pittsburg and graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and was seriously wounded at the end of the war near Saabruken, Germany. He was a member of General George Patton's famous 3rd Infantry Battalion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Perkins was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Hortense Perkins Prater.

Survivors include one brother, William W. Perkins Sr. and one sister, Marilyn Perkins Harris, both of Brookhaven; one niece, Laurenn Prater Barker of Knoxville, Tenn.; and five nephews, William W. Perkins Jr. of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Don D. Perkins of Brookhaven, Steven Thomas Harris of Los Angeles, James Edgar Harris of Houston, Texas, Michael Perkins Harris of Atlanta and Sanford Prater of New Canaan, Conn.

Pallbearers will be James Edgar Harris, Stephen Thomas Harris, Michael Perkins Harris, Johnny Perkins, Jimmy Perkins and Bob Perkins. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Brookhaven Camellia Society and Members of Sons of the American Revolution.
