The Two Alpheus Gustin’s of Virginia
By Valerie Phillips Gildehaus, Nov 2018

This summary is to distinguish between Alpheus Gustin who died in 1800 in Monongalia County, Virginia, and Alpheus Gustin of Bath who died in 1814 in Berkeley County (now Morgan County), Virginia. The Gustine Compendium is contradictory on these two men and confuses them at times. The following seems to be the clearest statement of relationship:
The Gustine Compendium, page 175, quotes the following letter written by Capt. Joseph H. Gustin, 9 Sept. 1899, to George Wilmot Gustin:
"I have quite complete records (with authentic data, etc.) of the following children (and their descendants) of Alpheus (son of Rev. Alpheus) and Margaret (Strange) Gustin, of Va., to wit: Delilah, Robert, Aberdy, James Washington, John, Mary, and Amelia. My records are likewise authentic and equally complete of the following children (and their descendants) of one Alpheus Gustin (son of Amos of Glassenbury, Conn.) (i.e., a nephew of Rev. Alpheus) of Va. (now W. Va.), to wit: Ashbel, Abel, Abiel, Amariah, Mable, Margaret, and Mary. The two Alpheus Gustin's (first cousins), of Virginia, who were contemporaries (as shown by the dates of birth of their respective children), have puzzled me not a little."
That these are 2 different men is confirmed by a variety of documents.

The Gustine Compendium, page 175, last four lines, gives the source of at least some of Capt. Gustin’s informtion: Capt. Joseph H Gustin says he had corresponded with Samuel D. Gustin born 1854 Hardin Co IL, son of Isaiah Gustin, grandson of Amariah A. Gustin. [Samuel D. Gustin lived in the same neighborhood as his grandfather Amariah A Gustin (1789-1865), as did his father Isaiah, his uncle Thomas Gustin, his aunt Eleanor Lyons Gustin Ledbetter, and his aunt Elizabeth Gustin Bayne.]

Alpheus of Monongalia was listed in the tax records of Monongalia County from 1792 to 1800, when he died leaving a will that named his widow Mary and children, Abel, Ashbel, Abiel, Alpheus, Maple Pearce, Mary Steward, Ammeriah, Ammasa, and Margaret – last 3 not of age. 1792-4 listed as Alpheus Augustin/Agustin, 1798-1799 listed as Alpheus Gustin. In 1798, Alpheus Gustin and Mary his wife of Monongalia County purchased 1000 acres of land on Scotts Mill Run, Deed Index Vol 1 pg 495. No other Augustin/Gustins appear on the tax lists until 1800, when “Widdow Agustine” is listed along with Ashbel and Abiel. In 1801, Abiel, Ashbel, Alpheus and Abel Agustin are listed. 1810 census Monongalia County, VA pg 478, Mary Augustin female 45&, 2 males 16-26, Ashble Augustin a male aged 16-26, and John Augustin a male age 26-45. 1812 Monongalia County VA Superior Court envelope # 174a, Deed selling 118 acres signed by Mary Agustin, Ashbel Agustin and Sary his wife, Amariah Agustin and Als his wife, Ammasa Gustin.

Alpheus Gustin of Bath was listed in the tax records of Berkeley County consistently from 1782 to 1814. He is the only Gustin listed until 1800, when Robert is listed on the same property; in 1802, Aberdi and James Gustin are listed in Berkley County, also. Alpheus was listed as 45 & up on the 1810 census of Berkley Co VA. This Alpheus left no will, but was deceased by Jan 1815, when his estate was appraised, Robert Gustin Administrator [Berkeley Co Wills Vol 5 pg 295, 300]; Margarett Gustin purchased a number of items at the estate sale, with at least one purchase each by Robert Gustin, Abd Gustin, and John Gustin. Margaret Gustin’s will was written and probated in 1831 in Morgan Co VA [formed 1820 from Berkeley County]. She left everything to her son John C. Gustin. Aburdi Gustin age 73 born New York and John Gustin age 60 born Virginia were still living at the time of the 1850 census, living 2 households apart.
