James Lee Cooper, 96, known as the sage of Sivley Hill, will be buried here Wed. following services in the First Baptist church. He died Monday at his home on Sivley Hill near here (Clarksville, TX). Cooper was known for his wit and wisdom. He once said; "I never went to school but two months. If I'd gone to school as much as some people I'd probably have wound up in the penitentiary." Red River County people who took their troubles to him and asked advice were told; "Stand up and look life in the face and wave your wings and crow." A 33-degree Mason, Cooper attended the annual reunions for many years at the Scottish Rite Temple in Dallas. Cooper believed he was the senior subscriber to A. H. Belso Corporation publications. He said he subscribed to the The Galveston News in January, 1876, and when The Dallas News was established in 1885, he subscribed to it. Born in Mississippi, Cooper came to Red River in 1861.....from his obituary.
