David O. Bower, retired miller and well known Civil Var veteran, died it(sic) 4:45 o'clock yesterday morning from an attack of influenza at his home on Main street, Bally, Berks county. He was aged 84 years, 1 month and 22 days. He was a son of the late William and Elizabeth (Bauer) Bower. There survive his widow, Helen (Aimes) Bower; these children: Nellie, wife of Henry Raudenbush, Pennsburg; Carrie, wife of John Gerhart, Pottstown; John, Los Angeles, Cal.; Charles Rowan, Ia., and May, wife of John Brown, Iowa Falls, Ia.; also one sister, Selina, wife of Jacob Shaner, Pottstown.
Mr.Bower worked for many years at his trade as a miller. Later he was employed as a watchman here. He moved to Bally from Pottstown about 10 years ago. Years ago he farmed in the State of Iowa. He was a member of the Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Bally.
Mr. Bower was a member of Graham Post, No. 106. G.A.R., of this borough, and was a Past Post Commander of that Post. He enlisted for service in the Civil War in September, 1862, as a member of the 167th Pennsylvania Volunteers, at Reading. This enlistment was for nine months' service.
The regiment was the first sent to Suffolk, Va., and thence to Blackwater, Va.,; then to White House Landing, to Yorktown back to White House Landing, to Washington and to Gettysburg.
Mr. Bower fought in battles at Blackwater, the siege of Suffolk and Gaines' Mill.
Upon the expiration of his enlistment he re-entered the service for a period of three years when he joined the Second Regular Cavalry at Monroe Station, Md. This unit was sent to the West in 1865, being located at Leavenworth, Kan, thence to Fort Larime, Wyo., and then to Fort C.F. Smith, Mont., then returned to Fort Larime and finally to Fort D.A. Russel, which is three miles from Chepene, where Mr. Bower was discharged. His service in the West was largely Indian warfare, and the cavalry was kept busy almost the entire time fighting with the Sioux Indians.
The cavalry sent to the West relieved infantry regiments s that they could be brought East to turn back the Confederate invasion.
Funeral on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
Services in the Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Rev. Aloysius F. Sherk officiating. Military honors will be accorded the deceased by veterans of this borough. Interment in adjoining cemetery."
