WORLD WAR I VETERAN
Clarence John Wagner was born November 5, 1890 to Bernard Henry Wagner and the former Mary Pulcheria Reed.
Clarence was the only surviving son of 10 children:
Loretta 1889-1906
Clarence 1890-1988
Genevieve 1892-1981
Frances 1894-1961 - MY GRANDMA
Marguerite 1896-1972
Boy died as an infant
Josephine 1898-1994
Twins died as infants, boy & girl
Eva 1908-1977
On his mother's side Clarence, his sisters and his 1st cousin Viola Reed are descended from and the Great-Grand-children of the James Ritchey / George Reed famlies, who were documented as early settlers of Illinois. Clarence is the Grandson of Margaret A. Ritchey and Nelson Reed.
Clarence was born in Homer Glen, Illinois. He came to Colorado from Illinois with his family in 1910. At first they lived on a farm near Meade, Colorado. Later his father bought a farm (the Wagner Ranch) at Gowanda, west of Platteville, Colorado.
Clarence and his sisters, Frances, Eva, Josephine, Marguerite and Genevieve all studied teaching at Colorado State Teachers College, Greeley, Colorado. Josephine graduated with a History major, Marguerite with a major in Mathematics. Genevieve with a major in Romance Languages, Clarence, Eva and Frances with a major in English.
At the age of 27, Clarence married Dorothy Pauline George, in 1917.
Clarence taught school for many years. His wife Pauline also taught, in the public schools. Over the years each became school principals. Later Clarence became the School District Superintendent. Eventually his wife became the Superintendent of a neighboring school district. Both were respected educators for many years.
Clarence had purchased some ranch land and built their home, when he first began teaching. He was a part time, "gentleman rancher", while working full time as an educator. For many years he had spread the word to all of the neighboring communities that "if anyone wanted to sell their land, that he was buying". Over the years he amassed a huge amount of acreage. His ranch had grown quite large.
When Clarence retired from education, he ran his ranch full time. He was voted "Colorado Cattleman of the Year" in 1956. My Dad remembers that his Uncle Clarence was quite a respected rancher.
Clarence continued to run his ranch until a few years before he passed away. He lived until the age of 97. Clarence left us and entered Heaven Jul 22, 1988 at Fort Collins, Colorado.
Clarence was my Great-Uncle.
