Captain Alvin Francis Blockinger, USN (Ret) died on 28 September in Bethesda, Maryland. Memorial services were held at the Fort Myer Chapel on 3 October, with interment in Arlington National Cemetery. Reporting to the Naval Academy with an at-large appointment, he was graduated with the Class of 1960, reporting to sea thereafter in a varied and interesting career which included command of the landing ship FAIRFAX COUNTY, then a three-year tour in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations in 1978 before being transferred to the retired list in
1981. Additional duty was as director of research and analysis for strategic and theater nuclear forces at the Defense Nuclear Agency, and he had worked for this organization after his retirement from active duty. He had earned a master’s degree in operational systems analysis at the Navy postgraduate school, and he was awarded the Legion of Merit while on active duty. He is survived by his widow Nancee, of Burke, VA; two daughters; his mother and a brother.

Blockinger, Jr., 46, a Navy Captain who was director of research and analysis for strategic and theater nuclear forces at the Defense Nuclear Agency, died of a pulmonary embolism Sept. 28 at the Bethesda Naval Hospital. He had lived in Burke, Va., since 1978. He had served with the Defense Nuclear Agency, which is associated with nuclear weapons research and testing, since 1981. Capt. Blockinger was a native of Pittsburgh. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1960 and the Naval War College in 1978. He earned a master’s degree in operational systems analysis at the Navy Postgraduate School. He had commanded the FAIRFAX COUNTY, a tank landing ship, before beginning a three- year tour in the office of the chief of naval operations in 1978.
His decorations include the Legion of Merit. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Fairfax. Survivors include his wife, Nancee Ann White Blockinger of Burke; two daughters, Cynthia Ann and Debra Jane, both of Burke; his mother, Martha Ash of Ormand Beach, Fla. and a brother.
