Capt. Berry was born 27 Feb 1866 at Portland, Cumberland, Maine to Stephen Berry (1833-1919) and Sarah Webster Sawyer (1840-92). His father and grandfather were both Masonic Grand Secretaries many years for the state of Maine. The Navy Cross is presented (1918) to John G. Berry, Captain, U.S. Coast Guard, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Lydonia and the U.S.S. Yamacraw, engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of transporting and escorting troops and supplies through waters infested with enemy submarines and mines.
