Mrs. H. A. Wynn Teacher Here Many Years, Dies
Mrs. H. A. Wynn, 77, who taught in Southeast Panhandle schools more than 40 years, most of that time in Collingsworth County, died in a Childress nursing home at 5:15 a.m. Thursday, September 21.
She and Mr. Wynn had lived in Childress since 1950, and it was in that town that she ended her teaching career. Her health began to fail 10 years ago. Both Mrs. Wynn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie N. Benson, were teachers in the Wellington and Dodson schools. She, herself, taught her first school at Dodson, when there were only four teachers in the system. It was there, also, that she met Mr. Wynn, to whom she was married at Wellington on October 12, 1917. Mrs. Wynn also taught at Wilnulcer and Cross Roads and for many years, in Wellington Schools.
Born June 8,1895, in Gadsden, Alabama, Alda Benson came with her parents to Wellington while still a young girl, and she attended school here. Not content with her bachelor's degree, she continued her studies and received her master's degree from West Texas State University. For many years she was active in professional organizations for teachers.
She was a member of the Eastern Star and served as worthy matron of the Wellington Chapter in 1945, having previously filled those offices leading to it. Mrs. Wynn was a long-time devoted member of the Church of Christ.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Childress Church of Christ, with Auther Judd, minister, and Gaylord Cook, minister of the Wellington Church of Christ, officiating.
Pall bearers were her nephews. Graveside rites and burial were in the Dodson Cemetery.
Surviving Mrs. Wynn are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Dwight Robertson of Amarillo; a brother, Jess A. Benson of Lovington, New Mexico; two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two brothers preceded her in death, Charley Benson, who was a long-time editorial writer for the Fort Worth Star Telegram, and Ivan Benson.
Going from Wellington to the services at Childress were Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Stevenson and Oliver Young.
