The Wellington Leader  July 13, 1989

The Underwood family came to Dodson during the years of the Great Depression, when times were hard for everyone.  Mr. and Mrs. Underwood had 10 children.  Mr. Underwood did custom butchering of beef calves for people in the area. He went to their homes, did the complete butchering job and hung the carcass on a pair of cotton scales, as was customary at that time to swing from a windmill cross bar or a stout tree limb overnight.  For this hard work, he charged only $5.00 per animal, friends recall.  Mr. Underwood also did farm work and other jobs available in the community.  With this effort, he raised the children.  The children are Lucille King of Twitty, Mildred Barnett of Watsonville, Calif., James Underwood and Mary Miller, both of Amarillo; Maudie Barefoot of Greenbelt Lake, Clarendon; Jessie McCutcheon of Mangum, Okla., Georgia Simmons, Bill Underwood, Nellie Langford and Roy Underwood, all of Amarillo.
