The Rev. Dr. Thomas A. Hite, age 89, died on Thursday, February 27, 2003, at 6:30 a.m., at Redbanks Nursing Home.
He was the son of the late Fred and Mary Jane Darrett. He was one of nine children, of which four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. His wife of 54 years, Ida Morse Hite, preceded him in death on June 20, 1991.
He was in the ministry for 57 years: seven years at Green Ridge Baptist Church and 50 years at St. Paul's Missionary Baptist Church in Corydon. He was affiliated with the Ministers and Deacons Union, the Ministers Alliances of Kentucky and Indiana, Religions Circle No. 4, and the First District Association of Kentucky Baptist.
He retired from Sears and Roebuck and Company in 1973, after 23 years of service.
He was a graduate of Lincoln-Dunbar High School and Simmons Bible Seminary College in Louisville, Ky., and the recipient of many honorary doctorate degrees.
He is survived by one sister, Nancy (Augustus) Anderson of Evansville; one brother, Elder Joseph E. Hite of Boston, Mass.; nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, his caregiver, Pauline Dixon, and the St. Paul's Missionary Baptist Church family.
Services will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Missionary Baptist Church in Corydon, Ky., with the Rev. T.O. Haskins and the Rev. Alfonso McClellan officiating.
Friends may call on Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel in Evansville, where there will be a wake service from 6 to 8 p.m.
Entombment will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville. Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
