Arthur Hamilton Watson, born in Lonsdale, Rhode Island, September 20, 1849, and entered Brown University, where he graduated in 1870 with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy. He was a partner in Greene, Anthony & Company of Providence, the largest sellers of boots and shoes
in Rhode Island.
He was also vice-president of Nicholson File Company, which office he continued to hold until his death, vice-president of the Narragansett Electric Lighting Company, a director of the Globe National Bank, a director of the American National Bank, president of the Commercial Bank, a director in the Union Railroad Company, a director in the American Screw Company, president of the Providence, Fall River and Newport Steamboat Company, vice- president of the Providence Board of Trade, and vice-president of the board of managers of the World's Columbian Exposition from Rhode Island.
He was elected to the Common Council from the second ward. His was reelected for ten years service on the city council. The last three years he was president of the council. In 1892 Arthur H. Watson was the Republican candidate for mayor, but was defeated. In 1893 he entered the Board of Alderman from his ward, and served three terms. He was chairman of the Joint Special Committee which investigated the Municipal Court. He retired from politics in 1896.
Arthur Watson was a member of the Hope Club, Agawam Hunt Club, Commercial Club and University Club.
On February 20, 1873, Col. Watson married to Annie Potter Sprague, daughter of Byron Sprague and Harriet Comstock, of Providence. They had four children, Harriet Sprague Watson, Byron Sprague Watson, Mary Dockray Watson and Annie Hamilton Watson. Annie Potter Sprague Watson died February 22, 1904.

Arthur married 2nd, Helen "Nellie" Wheaton (Greene) Balch on March 11, 1909, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Albert Crawford Greene and Lucretia Caroline Whipple. Her 1st husnand was Joseph Balch, son of Brig, Gen. Joseph Pope Balch and Laura Tiffany Field.
