John was born about 1640 or 1641, the son of John Baldwin and Mary Camp. It could be that he was born in the first three months of the year, thus the discrepancy.

He was baptized on Mar. 20, 1648, and he accepted full communion in Milford on Oct. 8, 1662.

John was a shoemaker and a sealer of leather.

He had two wives. He wed Hannah Bruen in 1663 in Milford, (now New Haven Co.), Connecticut. They had Sarah, Richard, Hannah, John and Elisabeth.

His second wife was Ruth Botsford, whom he married in Milford. They were the parents of Elnathan, Ruth, Daniel, Nathaniel, Jonathan, Timothy. Some sources also list a son Obadiah here.

John also had sons Samuel and Joseph, but researchers disagree about who their mother was.

John was one of the founding fathers of Newark (now Essex Co.), New Jersey, having bought part of the neck in 1674. He was living there by the time his second family was coming along.

In 1682 he was chosen at town meeting "...to look that the young people carry themselves orderly in times of divine worship".

John's will was dated Sep. 23, 1702 and proved Aug. 31, 1706.
