March 27, 1958: Joseph B. Strickland Passed Away Thursday in Waycross Hospital:

Joseph Barney Strickland, former chairman of Brantley County Commissioners and a former state senator, died in a Waycross hospital, Thursday morning, March 27, after a long illness.

Mr. Strickland was one of the most prominent citizens of Brantley County and South Georgia. He served for many years as chairman of the Brantley County Commissioners and represented Brantley County in the state legislature for a number of years and was later state senator from the Third District.

He was the Brantley County Agent for the Standard Oil Company. He was a member of the Nahunta Baptist Church, a Mason and a member and former president of the Brantley County Lions Club. He also had served on the state Democratic Committee.

Mr. Strickland was a leader in the development of federal Route 301, spending much time and money in helping to organize and carry on the 301 Highway Association.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the Nahunta Baptist Church, with interment in Oakland Cemetery, Waycross. Masonic rites will be carried out at the graveside.

The body will lie in state at the Baptist Church for two hours prior to the funeral service. Rev. Cecil Thomas, pastor of the Nahunta Baptist Church, will conduct the funeral service. Chambless Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Survivors include wife, Mrs. Juanita Brugler Strickland; daughter, Mrs. Bibb Saye of Selma, Ala.;3 sons, Robert Strickland, Texas City, Texas, J. L., Atlanta, Ga., Marshall of Nahunta; 2 brothers, Charlie and Ray of Jacksonville, Fl.; stepmother, Nora Strickland and 4 grandchildren.
