Younger brother of the Inca King Juan Gabriel Tupac Amaru. He was arrested at Lima and taken to Spain where he remained confined in Ceuta for almost 40 years. In 1822 he was found by a Peruvian priest who saved his life and after he moved to Buenos Aires, where he was assigned a lifetime pension. He wrote his memoirs about his years as a Spanish prison. He was the fifth grandson of the last emperor of Peru, and possible candidate for the throne of the United Provinces of South America, as proposed by General Manuel Belgrano.
