Indian Wars veteran; 3rd Brigade, 11th Regiment Minnesota Militia, Captain John Belm's Company. He also served in Company L of the 1st Minnesota Cavalry. He was a native of Germany and was born in Koenigsberg, East Prussia. Prior to the war, in 1860, he worked as a carpenter and his father, Ferdinand Kirschstein, was a typographer.
He joined Captain Belm's Company on August 18, 1862, the day the Dakota War broke out. He fought with the Company in the second Battle of New Ulm, which took place on August 23. A roster of those killed in the battle erroneously lists his name. He survived the war. However, his father, Ferdinand Kirschstein, who was residing with him at the time, was killed on Aug. 23, 1862.
Digital records show that on Nov. 4, 1862, he was mustered into Company L of the 1st Minnesota Cavalry (Mounted Rangers) at the rank of Corporal. He was 22 years of age. He was mustered out on Dec. 2, 1863. The 1890 Veterans Schedule states that he enlisted in Company K of the 1st Minnesota Cavalry in Dec. 1862 and was discharged in Feb. 1864.
By May of 1875, he had married his wife Elizabeth B. ("Elise"or "Elisa"), and his mother Caroline was living with the couple in New Ulm. The 1880 Census shows that he was still living in New Ulm with his family, and working as a US Naval Agent at 34 years of age.
By 1890, he had moved to Winona, Minnesota, where he would spend the remaining years of his life. He filed for his Civil War pension in 1892. Julius' mother died on March 20, 1906. Her obituary gives her son's name as "Capt. Julius Kirschstein".
Julius Kirschstein's name, instead of his father's, was mistakenly engraved in the Defenders Monument and Pioneer Monument in New Ulm. The monuments are in memory of the local soldiers and settlers who lost their lives during the US-Dakota war. The mixup may have occurred because Julius' middle name was the same as his father's first name - Ferdinand.
