Amos Carson Mayes, 85, of Stanley died Friday afternoon, Jan. 19, at the Towers Nursing Home in Charlottesville, where he had been a patient three months. Mr. Mayes had been in failing health several years. He was born at Stanley March 12, 1887 and was a son of the late James and Sarah Painter Mayes. Mr. Mayes was a member of Alma Primitive Baptist Church. His wife, the former Leona Price, died Feb. 19, 1960. Survivors include five sons, Floyd A. Mayes of Waynesboro, Roy L. Mayes of Port Republic, Eldon C. Mayes of Wichita, Kans., and James D. and Aaron V. Mayes, both of Stanley, and four daughters, Mrs. Pauline Comer of Luray, Mrs. Eula Callison and Mrs. Rena Craddock, both of Richmond, and Miss Arbutus Mayes of Stanley. The funeral was conducted Sunday afternoon, Jan. 21, at the Alma Primitive Baptist Church by Elder A.F. Sudduth. Burial was in the Adventist Cemetery in Stanley.
