Westerfield Overfield was born in West Virginia February 28, 1826 and died September 2, 1909 at his home near Hiawatha. He was married October 30, 1853 to Rachel Solomon. To this union were born eleven children all living and present at the time of the death except a son, he having died in infancy.
The sons are: James, living near Hiawatha, Moreland, near Fairview, Boyd, five and one half miles west of Hiawatha and Gordon, who resides at home. The daughters are: Matilda Speak, of Axtell, Kans., Mrs. Anna Porter, of Kansas City; Mrs. Viola McCollum, of Parsons, Kans., Mrs. Mary Blake, of Powhattan, Mrs. Cora Brockhoff and Mrs. Maggie Mellenbruch, of Hiawatha.
The deceased is survived by the aged wife and mother, who keenly feels the loss of a faithful and loving companion. Thirty grandchildren and one great grandchild were all present for the service. Mr. overfield came to Brown County from West Virginia in February 1871, and settled on a farm seven miles west and one and one half miles south of Hiawatha, where he lived many years, being a successful farmer and stockman. Afterward he removed from the farm to the present home. He was of a retiring disposition, industrious, loving honesty and uprightness and having the respect and confidence of the entire community.
The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Merritt of the Baptist church, after which the body was laid to rest in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
