Giles had a homestead about 100 miles east of Wichita, Kansas, until he sold the property. He and his wife, Rebecca "Betty" Corel Parman, left Kansas via the Oregon Trail in 1882 and in 1884 selected a spot a couple of miles west of Condon, Oregon, where he started farming and raising livestock. Condon became a town in 1885. From time to time he purchased land until his estate was very large. In 1910 Giles sold his ranch to sons George & Lloyd and in 1914 George bought out Lloyd. Rebecca died in Condon, Oregon, from complications of childbirth, leaving her husband and five children Julia, Sarah, George, Ethelyn and Lloyd Parman. Giles when into a deep depression after Rebecca's death and for a number of years pretty much left the children in the care of neighbors. Their first son, Walter, died in infancy and he and his five siblings were all born in Kansas. Giles was a short man, about 5'8" and wore a goatee to cover a dimple in his chin. He fought in the Indian War. (From The History of Gilliam County, Oregon)
