James Reidy was the second child and eldest son of James and Nora Ray Reidy and was called "Bud" ("Buddy" as a child), by the family. Born in Junction City, Kansas, he and his family moved to Coffeyville, Kansas, where his father was employed as the foreman of a flour mill.
Graduating from high school in 1942, he was inducted into the United States Navy. After training in Chicago and San Francisco, he was assigned to the seaplane tender "Barataria" and spent the duration of the war aboard that boat. Stationed mainly in the Philippines, the men on the "Barataria" spent time repairing seaplanes and saw limited action, although they were occasionally under fire, and did receive a battle star for the battle of Lingayen Gulf. After the "Barataria" was relieved in the Philippines, he was stationed at Okinawa, Shanghai and Incheon before returning to the States. Jim Reidy was discharged as "Torpedoman's Mate 2nd Class."
Taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, Jim Reidy enrolled at Washburn University in Topeka, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma, and graduated in 1950. Continuing his education at the University of Tulsa Law School, he met an Iowa girl on a blind date. He and Lucille Larsen were married in Coffeyville in 1951. After his graduation from law school, he set up practice in Poteau, OK and he and Lucille raised a family of six children. Besides his law practice, he served as County Attorney for LeFlore County, and later as Special District Judge for LeFlore, Haskell and Latimer Counties.
