The Civil War broke out and Sylvanus enlisted in Co E 4th Iowa Cavalry in Sept 1861, the same month they were married. He served for four years. He returned to Malcom, IA, and they raised their family of six children: Simeon, Bessie, Zellah, Sylvester, Frank, and Austin.
In 1882 the Dakota Territory opened for homesteading. Sylvanus and Georgianna's brother, Norman Bates, left for the Dakota Territory to claim homesteads. Norman and Sylvanus served together in Co E 4th IA Cavalry.
After filing on property known as Highmore Station, Georgianna and children migrated by railroad to South Dakota. Sylvanus was elected Sheriff of Hyde County and held the office until his death. Georgianna died three years after Sylvanus.
