Lucille Virginia Dovel Houser, 88, of Stanley, died on Aug. 30, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.

Mrs. Houser was born on Dec. 1, 1919, in Page County and was a daughter of the late Leonard Andrew Dovel and Mattie Florence Smelser Dovel.

She graduated valedictorian of her class from Stanley High School in 1938. She worked at Sleepwear Inc. in Elkton, Wranger Inc. in Luray, and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Houser was a lifelong and active member of Leake's Chapel Church of the Brethren, where she served several terms as a deacon and relished the role of treasurer for over 60 years.

She was the oldest living member in her immediate family. On Oct. 16, 1938, she married Edward Page Houser, who preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1998. They were very blessed to have shared a life together for more than 60 years.

Page and Lucille especially enjoyed traveling and went on many journeys in search of distant relatives.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Vida "Billie" Marie Dovel Young and Alda Mae Dovel Alger.

Survivors include a son, Lynn Page Houser of Stanley; a daughter, Mary Houser Kyger of Harrisonburg; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Susan and James Kile of Harrisonburg; two great-grandsons, William Garrett Kile and Bryant Gage Kile; a brother, Ralph Lee Dovel of Stanley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Lucille enjoyed cooking, sewing, and tending to her vegetable garden. Though small in stature, she was a woman of considerable substance.

All who knew her will forever remember her fiery spirit, determined nature, quick wit, and loving devotion to her family and friends.

The Revs. Hal Sonifrank and Eric Croft will conduct the funeral 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at the

Leake's Chapel Church of the Brethren with the interment immediately following in the church cemetery.
