Lee and wife Edith Alexander were tobacco farmers who also raised chickens for the makers of Campbell Soup.

They resided on South Hill Road in rural Timmonsville, South Carolina, and actively attended Sparrow Swamp Baptist Church, just south of their home.

Lee was an ex-officio member of the church, and a lay-pastor. A well-respected man. He and Edith had one child, a daughter named Mary.
