Born in KY son of Daniel Skidmore and Elizabeth Carmen.

Joseph Skidmore spent his youth on the farm and received a common school education. He was married in 1865 to Mary A. Thompson, daughter of Joseph Thompson and Letitia Lower, of Nodaway county, and they began their married life on a portion of the old homestead in Washington township, near Guilford. Joseph is an excellent business man and is exceptionally well posted on current topics; he has been very successful as a farmer, and has taken more or less interest in the affairs of his county. For two years, 1879 and 1880, he was tax collector of the county. Since coming here he has accumulated considerable property. He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and is a Democrat in politics. During the Civil war he served in the state militia. He and his wife are the parents of eleven children, nine of whom are living. William D. and Ora E. being deceased. Those living are Charles D., Daniel, John, Lawrence, James, Florence M., Joseph L., Grover C. and Jacob E. (From PAST AND PRESENT of Nodaway Co. Joseph died of Diabetes.
