Otto was a lad of thirteen when he came with his father to Belfast Township, MN. As a young man Otto did carpenter work. He and Otto Miller built the row of houses on the street west of the elementary school. Each cottage was built & ready to be occupied for a price of $600. He also helped build the "brick blocks" on St. Paul Street. In 1891 he started his furniture business in a building on the west side of St. Paul Street between Second Street & Front Street. Before long he built a double building in the next block. His store was in the south half of the building, and the family lived in the apartment over the furniture store. With his expanding business, he moved to the J.T. Smith building on the corner of St. Paul & Second Street. Otto was a licensed undertaker.

As well as being a respected businessman, Otto served as a county commissioner for 24 years. He was a member of the Fulda Volunteer Fire Department, serving as it Chief for 30 years. He was also Fulda's mayor for over 20 years. Baseball was one of Otto's favorite sports. He was an avid supporter of the town team, and for many years provided a ball diamond on land which was used rent-free. His fame as a bicyclist was well known in the area, having competed in many bicycle races which were popular around the turn of the century.

Otto & Marie were the parents of Otto (died in infancy) Carl, Edward "Fritz", Paul, Richard, Dorothy (Harold) Curley, Helen (Clem) Haverkamp & Marie Isabelle.
