Laurie Colman Evans was the youngest of Charles Edward Evans Sr. and Mary Russ. Their children in 1910 and 1920 censuses were Belle, Kate, Jack (Joshua), Mary, Leland, Mary, Margaret "Maggie", Pearl, Charles E. Jr., Laurie and nephew Forest Roark. Forest was listed as an adopted brother in Laurie's July 1948 repatriation obituary and as a nephew of his father in a census. Possibly an infant sister Inez (1898-1898) to be confirmed. No source on an Ancestry tree.

In 1942, he married Josephine Hundley Luntsford of Richmond, Virginia, after he enlisted in January and before he went overseas in the late summer of that year. She joined the Women's Army Corps on January 31, 1944, a few months after his death and served as an office machine operator. Previously she was a seamstress in the 1943 Richmond directory.

Sergeant Evans Dies in Plane Crash in England

Sergeant Laurie C. Evans. husband of Josephine Lunsford Evans, of Richmond, died November 10 in an airplane crash In England. The crash occurred in Eye, Suffolk, East Anglia, but no other details concerning Sergeant Evans death were given. Brigadier General J. A. Ulio. of Washington in a letter on November 19 to the soldier's mother, Mrs. Mary Evans, of Arcadia. Fla., expressed his regret that no additional information is available. Sergeant Evans, 29, was a gunner on a bomber, and went to England in September 1942. He is survived by his widow, his mother, a brother. J. Z. Evans, of Richmond. and a sister. Mrs. Mary Chalkley, also of Richmond.

Full military honors will be accorded Staff Sergeant Laurie C. Evans during funeral services for the World War II soldier scheduled at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 25 at the Robarts Funeral Home Chapel.

Rev. Wm. J. Barfield of Miami will preach the sermon, with Battery D and the American Legion in charge of the service at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The soldier's body was due to arrive today, Thursday, from the Atlanta Distribution Depot at Atlanta, Ga. It was brought from the Brookwood Cemetery in London, England, aboard the U.S. Army transport, "Lawrence Victory."

Sgt. Evans died Nov. 10, 1943 in a plane crash in England. He was 29 years old at the time of his death, and was the son of Mrs. Mary Evans, 603 North Polk Ave.

The deceased soldier entered the service in January, 1942, and after receiving training at Langley Field, Va., was sent overseas to England in August of the same year for further training. He was a mechanic and a gunner aboard a bomber during his length of service.

Sgt. Evans was born in Andrew, S. C., March 5, 1914, the son of the late C. E. Evans and Mrs. Mary Evans. He came to Arcadia with his parents in 1925 and attended school here.

Shortly before war broke out he worked in a shipyard at Norfolk, Va., and then entered the Army Air Forces.

Surviving are: his mother, Mrs. Mary Evans; three brothers, Jack of Richmond, Va., Leland of Englewood, Fla., C. E. Evans Jr. of Gasparilla, Fla.; one adopted brother, Forrest Roark of Wildwood, Fla.; four sisters, Mrs. M.L. Tanner of Joseph City, Ariz., Mrs. N. T. Chalkley of Richmond, Va., Mrs. M. F. Casselman of Andrew, S.C., and Mrs. T. F. Wilder of Hamlet, N.C.

News has been reached in Andrews by Mrs. F.M. Casselman of the death of her brother, Sgt. Laurie C. Evans, gunner on a bomber of the Air Corps of the United States. He died as the result of an airplane crash in Eye, Suffolk, East Anglia, England, while he was loyally serving his country. Sgt. Evans was born on the Evans plantation near Peahouse Landing on Black River in Georgetown County. He has a very large connection of relatives and friends in Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties who will regret to learn of his death."
