William Foster, a native of Pennsylvania, was a resident of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, when he enlisted Oct. 5, 1861, at the age of 42 years. He mustered in Co K 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov. 25, 1861. Foster was promoted to Seventh Corporal Nov. 26, 1861; Sixth Corporal Jan. 16, 1862; Company Commissary Sergeant Nov. 1, 1862. He mustered out Dec. 4, 1864, at Memphis, Tennessee, expiration of term of service.

William was born in Pennsylvania and was the son of Charles Foster and Margaret Trimmel. The family moved to Ohio where he married his first wife, Phoebe Scott, in 1841. They had two children, Amanda and Brownhill. Phoebe died in 1847 after a short illness.

William married Elizabeth Harter in Ohio in 1849. Two children, George and Jonathan, died in infancy in Ohio. During the summer of 1853 the family moved to Henry County, Iowa. William bought land and farmed until his death in 1882.

Other children: Mary C, Charles, Edmond, James, Phoebe (died in infancy) Estella, and Harlan.
