Rachel was the daughter of Stephen and Angeline McClendon, born in Pike County, Mississippi. She married James Michael Bridges, also of Pike County. They had seven children: Lena Mae Erickson, Eddie Franklin, Arthur Everett, Joe Wallace, Rosa Angie Howard, Rubie, and Nancy Huffhines. The family moved to Allen, Texas, after 1890.
