Elizabeth C. Hunter was born in Camden, SC. In 1819, her family moved to Conecuh County, AL. She married Samuel White Oliver there Jan 20, 1824. Samuel was at the time the law partner of John Starke Hunter, Elizabeth's brother. Samuel represented Conecuh County as a State Representative for 11 terms, six as Speaker of the House. In 1837, they moved to a 2000 acre plantation in Dallas County, where Samuel ran for governor that year. Samuel died suddenly in Jan 1838. He and Elizabeth had six children, three male and three female. Samuel was buried on the plantation site, but apparently that site is now lost.

Oct 15, 1840 Elizabeth married Alphonso Sprague in Dallas County. They soon moved to Mobile, where they had seven children; only four living to adulthood.
