He served in Civil War, Mizell's Co. F, 7th FL Infantry CSA. Per pension application records, Stephen Harris enlisted Gainesville April 1862. He was in Bentonville, North Carolina and parts of South Carolina when and after General Sherman and his troops came through there. One letter tells that Stephen Harris helped protect the women and children when Sherman came through SC. One early war record, allegedly inaccurate, provides that Stephen Harris deserted his troops. After Johnson surrendered and the war ended, in May 1865, he was discharged in South Carolina.

He was married to Martha Smith Harris. It is not known if she, too, is buried in Harris Cemetery.

He was the son of Ebenezer and Martha Purdom Harris.
