Mr. Thomas MITCHELL, one of the pioneer residents of Douglas Township died last Thursday, age 87 years, 8 months, 15 days. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Kirkman, at three conduced by Rev. Frank Bean. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery west of Kirkman.
Thos. MITCHELL was born in county Cork, Ireland, in 1824. When, he was seven years old his parents came to America, settled near Lake Erie, Penn., on a farm. The family lived successively in Homes county, Ohio and Knox county, Illinois, when Mr. and Mrs. MITCHELL came to Douglas township, Shelby county, in 1874, where they have lived until the home was broken up by the death of Mrs. MITCHELL some months ago. He bought a farm of 240 acres at the beginning which has been increased to 700 acres during the long years of his residence.
Mr. MITCHELL was married to Miss Lucinda HENDRICKS, July 18, 1852 {sic 1850}, in Illinois. Since the death of his wife he has made his home with his eldest son, Alex, near Defiance. He joined the Methodest church when a young man and lived an exemplary life.
He was the father of eleven children six of them are living and were at his bedside when he passed away. He also had 39 grandchildren living and 26 great-grandchildren.
The children present at the funeral were: C. A. MITCHELL and family of Defiance; Ellen COZAD and family of Council Bluffs; Mrs. J. W. ANDERSON of Wagner, S.D.; A. E. MITCHELL and family of Lemmon, S.D.; A. A. MITCHELL and family of Defiance; Mrs. Laura BIGLER of Grand Junction, Colo; Epraim WELLS and family, grandson of the deceased, of Great Bend, Kans, were also present. The union of Mr. and Mrs. surrounded by comforts that were un-MITCHELL extended over a period of nearly fifty-nine years. Shelby county was a pioneer district when they came to it and they saw their full share of the rough life incident to a new country, but secure in each other's affections they lived to see themselves prosperous and their children surrounded by comfirts that were unknown in their youthful days.
The large number of friend gathered to pay the last tribute of respect attested to the regard felt for this worthy couple whose work on earth is ended. **jj5/27/1999c.
