Felix Handley, 76, whose association with the City of Wellington began more than 40 years ago, died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, January 2 at St. Anthony's Hospital in Amarillo, where he had been a patient since December 8.
For several years he had been in charge of pumping operations for the City Water Works.
Mr. Handley was a charter member of the Wellington Volunteer Fire Department and remained with it 17 years. At one time he was assistant chief.
He came here 50 years ago from Childress. His work for the City began as manager of the light plant. He left the city when the plant was sold to West Texas Utilities Company but returned to its water department in 1935. In 1940, he and his family moved to Altus and later to Paducah, then he and Mrs. Handley returned to Wellington in 1953. Mr. Handley again was associated with the City Water Department.
Joseph Felix Handley was born September 14, 1892 in Dozier, Alabama. He was still a baby when his parents, the late Daniel and Martha Ann Handley, moved to Texas and settled at McMahan. He was married to Miss Osie O'Rear December 31, 1922 at Norman, OK.
Mr. Handley was a veteran of World War I, a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and the American Legion.
Surviving Mr. Handley are his wife, Mrs. Osie Handle of Wellington; a son, Douglas Handley of El Paso, a daughter, Mrs. Wanda Henry of Rockford, IL; two brothers and a sister: E. D. Handley of Freestone, Roy Handley of Floydada, and Mrs. Lizzie Owen of MaMahan. There are five grandchildren.
